Packers Right Tackle Options For 2013 Season Coming Together

Packers Right Tackle
The Packers made headlines earlier this off season when they rearranged their offensive line, moving right tackle Brian Bulaga and all-pro guard Josh Sitton to the left side, as well as moving left guard T.J. Lang to right guard. Note that EDS has been penciled in as the starting center since the end of the draft, although that scares me. This leaves the right tackle position wide open. Let’s look at the candidates.

David Bakhtiari- This is a very interesting scenario. Bakhtiari, a fourth round draft choice in April, is perhaps the most intriguing name in the bunch. He has the skills necessary to be a good starting tackle, but is he refined enough to take the job right away as a rookie? That will be up to McCarthy and this coaching staff.
Andrew Datko- Datko, a 7th round draft choice of the Packers last year, would have been a top draft choice if it weren’t for his injuries in college. If he is healthy, he has as much talent as anyone vying for this job. Question is, will he be healthy, and will he be ready to play?

Marshall Newhouse- Newhouse could be kept as a backup based on experience, even if it wasn’t pretty.

Don Barclay- Barclay should be penciled in at the top of the depth chart by default right now, as it should be. Barclay, a 2012 undrafted free agent, gave nothing short of a heroic effort stepping in for the injured Brian Bulaga last season, and was yet another example of the Packers style of draft and develop. He could be beat out, and I hope he is beat out by a more talented player such as Datko or the next guy on this list, but he still should be kept as a reserve.

Derek Sherrod- This is a perfect example of why life never goes as planned. If everything would have gone according to plan, Sherrod would be the starting left tackle of the Packers right now, and he would be one of the game’s best. Coming out of college Sherrod was a semi-raw, but physically gifted and athletic lineman. Injuries have derailed his career, and have caused a mess along the offensive line. If healthy, he is the Packers most gifted offensive lineman and should be the starting right tackle.
